Back in the Lowlands

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

So it’s back from the six-month stay up in the high altitude of Banff. I will try to post some of the many goodies that came out of that intensive working period here, as well as finish bringing the website back to its fully operational state. There is not so much time left after I’ve finished scheming for the day, but it will happen within the next little while.

Until then, here is a taste of FACEMELT with the extraordinary Sam Davidson. Thanks to Will Howie for a great evening in Telus Studio recording this stuff! I’ve named this one Brontosaurus Brunch

Bird on a Wire album’s in the can

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I had an amazing time recording my new album at The Banff Centre with the very talented Daniel Porter. He made the experience so smooth and enjoyable, I couldn’t believe it! We recorded all the new pieces in 2 days and had an extra day to record all kinds of improvisations and an impromptu bonus track with saxophonist/sound-designer Curtis Macdonald.

Here is a sample: my piece a little bird told me.

I’ll be mastering the album this week, so it’ll be ready to go very soon!

O Rosa Bella

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Prepared Piano

I wrote a new piece for three residents who inspired me:

pianist Rosabel Choi, saxophonist Adam Kinner (aka Kinny K Blaze) and bassist Jake Leckie. It’s based on the 15th-century chanson O Rosa Bella by John Bedingham (originally it was attributed to Dunstable). The piano preparations I was working with at the time made their way into the piece: magnets, chopstics, coat hangers, etc.

Have a listen to the recording of the concert December 10th at The Banff Centre.

Fall Creative Residency at the Banff Centre

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I was in residence at The Banff Centre for 7 weeks this past fall. It was a very intense experience, working towards the premiere and tour of Bird on a Wire and the recording of the album of the same name. I spent three weeks preparing for the tour and then another 4 weeks after the tour recording and mixing and getting involved in projects with other residents at the centre. You can read about Bird on a Wire in the projects section, but I’d like to share some of the highlights of my time there with you here.
